Everything you need to know about StepSync.
How does step equivalency work? StepSync uses a 4-tier system: first, it checks actual calories burned from your Apple Watch. If unavailable, it uses heart rate data to estimate calories. Next, it falls back to MET values. Finally, if no data exists, it uses distance or time. Your body weight is factored in to keep things fair.
Will my cycling steps be the same as walking steps? Not necessarily — and that's the point. StepSync converts based on effort, not distance. The conversion reflects actual calorie expenditure, so every workout is credited fairly.
Do I need an Apple Watch? No. StepSync works with just your iPhone. However, an Apple Watch adds heart rate data and workout-specific calories, which makes the conversion much more accurate.
Is my health data safe? Yes. Your Apple Health data stays on your device and is only read by StepSync to calculate equivalent steps. You can delete your account and all data at any time from Settings.
Can I compete with Android users? Not yet — StepSync is currently iOS only. An Android version is on our roadmap.
What happens if someone cheats? StepSync has anti-cheat measures built in. There's a 25,000 equivalent step daily cap enforced at the database level. We're continuously improving detection.
